From Local Heritage to the Global Stage: Songkhla as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy

Songkhla has taken another significant step onto the global stage after being recognized by UNESCO as a City of Gastronomy. This achievement marks a proud moment for the people of Songkhla and highlights the province’s rich culinary identity, cultural heritage, and local wisdom on an international level.

This recognition is not only about Songkhla’s diverse and distinctive food culture. It also reflects the deep connection between food, community, history, natural resources, and local ways of life. From traditional recipes and local ingredients to the unique geography of Songkhla’s three-water ecosystem, the province has developed a culinary identity that is both authentic and meaningful.

As part of this important occasion, Assistant Professor Dr. Supatra Davison, Assistant President for ASEAN Affairs and Creative Economy at Prince of Songkla University, and Mr. Jirawat Maneechote, Vice Governor of Songkhla Province, shared their perspectives on Songkhla’s journey toward becoming a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. Their discussion highlighted the province’s success, its readiness, and the collaborative efforts behind this milestone.

Today also marks the official Kick Off of Songkhla City of Gastronomy, a celebration of Songkhla’s pride and a call for all sectors to take part in shaping the province’s future. Government agencies, educational institutions, private organizations, local communities, food entrepreneurs, and residents all play an important role in driving Songkhla forward as a creative city.
